The president of Carl Sandburg College says he doesn’t see anything bad that could come of an effort to get Google to locate a possible higher speed web service in Galesburg.
Tom Schmidt has pledged the college’s support toward the so-called “Google in Galesburg” initiative — an effort that kicked off a week ago to encourage residents and companies alike to convince the multi-billion dollar Internet company to make use of the city to become a site for a test web assistance the company has mentioned could be 100 times quicker than typical web assistance.
Schmidt tells WGIL even if Google picked some other city — like others such as Davenport and Peoria — the chance to compete for such an opportunity appears like a pretty good concept to him.
“The mere process of competing enables you to learn more about what you need to accomplish to be profitable the next time,” Schmidt mentioned. “To tell you the truth, I think that’s the story of our country. We have a background of not being afraid of competing. By competing, you either win, or you get a better idea of what it takes to win. So, I am pumped about this chance.”
Schmidt says such an ultra high speed web connection would also enhance CSC’s own wireless web network called “EduNet” which serves most from the K-12 schools within the college’s 10-county district, providing them not only web assistance but also distance understanding opportunities.
The Galesburg School District, nevertheless, recently decided not to renew its contract with EduNet, instead opting to use internet service from local phone provider CenturyTel.
